"What began as a simple idea after graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2000 has grown into something far greater than I ever could have imagined. This year marks the 20th anniversary of my business, and I couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate this milestone with the people who have been with me every step of the way."

The Beginnings: A Passion Ignited
Looking back, I never imagined that crafting handmade cards as a complement to my textile design projects would lead to the creation of a globally recognised brand. But there was something about the process that captivated me—the blend of creativity, craftsmanship, and the ability to connect with people through design. With the support of a Prince's Trust Loan and a basic business plan, I took a leap of faith and started what would eventually become Laura Darrington Design.
The early days were tough. I worked out of a small office, which eventually evolved into a rickety loft room in my first terrace house. There were late nights, countless cups of tea, and moments of doubt, but there was also an unwavering belief that I could make this work. My big break came in 2008 when I won a Henry Award for Most Promising Young Designer. That recognition was the validation I needed to keep going, and it led to a much-needed move to the Old Baptist Chapel in Huncote, Leicestershire—a space that allowed my business to grow and my team to expand.
Growth and Recognition: Building a Brand
As the years passed, Laura Darrington Design began to resonate with a broader audience. We started gaining national accounts and attracting international customers, thanks to our regular appearances at trade shows and a few more Henries wins between 2009 and 2012. It was a thrilling time, seeing something I had built from scratch grow into a brand that people loved and wanted to be a part of.
2013 to 2016 brought significant changes, both personally and professionally. The arrival of my children shifted my focus temporarily, but it also inspired new designs and motivated me to expand the team to meet growing demand. Even with these new responsibilities, the brand continued to thrive, and in 2017, we received international recognition with a LOUIE Award in the US—an achievement that gave me immense pride.
A major turning point for the business came seven years ago when my partner Ross joined me in a more official capacity. Ross has always been my biggest supporter, quietly helping me behind the scenes while pursuing his own career. Having him by my side in a more active role has been transformative. His passion for customer relationships, sales, and business development has injected new energy into the brand. Together, we've built something that not only resonates nationally but also has a growing international presence.

As we celebrate 20 years in business, our mission remains as clear as ever: to inspire and uplift people through design, to consistently create products that deliver on quality, and to stay at the forefront of innovation. Sustainability will continue to be a key focus for us, ensuring that as we grow, we do so responsibly.
