39 COMPANY PROFILE When did you start up and why? Established in 1897, Moorcroft pottery makes each piece of ceramic art by hand in the arts and crafts tradition. What challenges have you overcome since the company’s launch? A world war, a great depression, and a pandemic, among other things. Moorcroft’s shape and surface design started in the Art Nouveau era. Design and shape reflect each generation’s tastes and never stands still – this is why we are still alive today! We are a designled company and yet have managed to hold onto our trademark heritage skills, which include turning each piece on a lathe to perfect its shape, outlining each design with clay slip, known, and discovered, at Moorcroft as tubelining, and handpainting with metallic oxides. Tell us about your product offering. Baubles are a gift from this generation to Moorcroft’s shape history. With each one made entirely by hand and featuring enchanting designs; from a Scottish snow-clad bothy to leaping reindeers, they hold both nostalgic and creative elements. They’re certainly something more than your mass-produced silver bauble to ponder over whilst you sip your mulled wine with friends and family. What are your most popular products? Moorcroft is collected worldwide with many pieces in Museums around the world. Without a doubt, Queen’s Choice, designed by Emma Bossons FRSA is Moorcroft’s most fruitful design in the art pottery’s history. Inspired by Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, every fruit mentioned by Shakespeare features in Emma’s design – ‘Be kind and courteous to this gentleman; Hop in his walks and gambol in his eyes; Feed him with apricots and dewberries; with purple grapes, green figs and mulberries...’
