COMPANY PROFILE 121 THE FINISHING TOUCH Eastern Counties Leathers offers leather and sheepskin accessories in traditional and seasonal designs… When did you start up and why? We were initially established in 1879 as a UK working tannery, specialising in the tanning and processing of chamois leathers and sheepskin rugs. Previously earning us the Royal Warrant [Royal Warrant no longer held] for chamois leathers. Since 2007 the range has been expanding and evolving to now include finished goods ranging from: sheepskin coats, gloves, slippers, belts and purses and handbags. What challenges have you overcome since the company’s launch? We have faced many challenges over the years, including many changes in UK to overseas production, wanting to remain UK based but not enough people wanting machinist jobs etc, rising costs of production materials, recessions affecting consumer spending habits. Of course, there was the pandemic and small independents being affected with colossal shipping cost hikes. Consumer habits changing to fast fashion purchases, investment pieces like leather handbags being not so popular. Tell us about your product offering. We offer leather and sheepskin accessories: coats, slippers, boots, gloves, mittens, home soft furnishings, children’s accessories, wallets, purses, handbags, travel goods, sheepskin rugs and hides.
