The UK’s Greeting Card Association (GCA), British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA), the Booksellers Association, the National Federation of SubPostmasters, Voice of the Postmaster and Bookshop.org have urged new Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to keep the postal service national, reliable and affordable. The new coalition is asking the government to reverse the slide in performance of Royal Mail and insist it meets existing performance targets before contemplating any changes to the legal obligations that hold the postal service to account. Patients who’ve missed hospital appointments, grandparents who failed to receive their birthday cards and voters who didn’t get their postal vote on time, know how much we all depend on a Royal Mail service that gets back to delivering. All of the organisations stand ready to help the new government meet its manifesto commitments as they undertake the vital task of restoring the postal service to health. 8

The range is to include insulated and uninsulated, modular, contemporary garden buildings, with apex or pent roof structures, all made with FSC-certified, PEFC or TR-compliant woods. The development process is now underway. The first functional prototypes are planned for autumn 2024, with the first building in the range – a studio – coming to market in March 2025 when demand for garden buildings is high. Further launches will follow, including another two studios and a garage in a barn-styled design. The launch of the entire range will be completed by spring 2026. All the buildings will highlight RHS branding on a nameplate or badge. This high-end collection, aimed at discerning homeowners and gardeners alike, is expected to meet a wide range of needs, from offices and gyms to summerhouses, garages and more. The highly contemporary look and feel of the buildings will take its inspiration from some of the very latest developments in the architecture industry – and from the RHS itself. Crane has enjoyed a long association with the RHS, having showcased its beautiful range of handmade garden buildings over many years at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and it will include design elements inspired by RHS buildings loved by millions of visitors to the RHS gardens. These will include RHS Hilltop – the home of gardening science, the UK’s first dedicated horticultural scientific centre of excellence, located at RHS Garden Wisley – and visitor centres at RHS Garden Bridgewater, RHS Garden Hyde Hall, and RHS Garden Rosemoor. This range will initially be offered through Crane’s established distribution channels. The company operates its own national network of 14 show centres; four more are planned by 2026. The range will also be sold via the company’s website. www.rhs.org.uk INDUSTRY NEWS 9

Rex London have been designing, creating and selling a range of bright and eclectic gifts since 1981. Its in-house illustrators and buyers hand-pick gifts for every occasion (and non-occasion). The results found that 48 percent of people expect to receive random gifts from their partners. They also revealed that more than 8 in 10 of us (84 percent) pretend to like gifts we dislike. In addition to this, the results found that 92 percent of people prefer giving random gifts than Christmas, birthday or gifts for other marked occasions. 91 percent say the same for receiving them. Rex London also asked respondents what the most important aspects of gift-giving are. Thoughtfulness came out on top, showing it really is the thought that counts. This was followed by the effort, then uniqueness, practicality and, in last place, price. The results show that the best way to tell you’ve given a good gift isn’t by the reaction of the recipient. More than half of respondents (52 percent) said it’s by how quickly they engage with the gift; 44 percent believe it’s defined by bringing up the gift in a random conversation in the future. Rex London also found that our least favourite people to buy for are the in-laws, with 26 percent of people voting for them. On the other hand, kids are the most popular group to buy gifts for (56 percent), followed by best friends (11 percent). More respondents voted for the dog than they did for friends or dads for their ‘favourite’. www.rexlondon.com INDUSTRY NEWS 11
FAIRE EXPANDS SUPPORT FOR NEW UK INDEPENDENT RETAILERS AFTER HELPING 500 STORES OPEN Aspiring UK retailers have the chance to set up shop for the first time this year, thanks to a unique programme and new contest from global wholesale marketplace Faire, which has helped 500 independent retailers open stores across the country since 2022. Faire, which connects hundreds of thousands of independent retailers with 100,000 independent brands across the world, plans to expand its pioneering Open with Faire programme in the UK over the next 12 months. More than a third of Britons (38 percent) told Faire that they dream of running their own shop, but a lack of financial support and a fear of failure were the biggest barriers to making that dream a reality. In response, Faire is launching its first UK contest to help two aspiring retailers open their dream store. The winners will be awarded £5,000 to spend towards inventory on Faire, to stock their stores ahead of opening day. After completing an application, a shortlist of five retailers will be selected by judges: • Rebecca Morter, founder & CEO of Lone Design Club • Andrew Goodacre, CEO of British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) • Wilfred Emmanuel Jones MBE • Charlotte Broadbent, Faire’s Country Lead for the UK Each finalist will be featured on Faire’s Instagram account, to over 750,000 followers. Every like they receive on their feature post will count as a vote, and the two retailers with the highest number of votes will win (£)5,000 in inventory funds. Designed to bolster the growth of the independent retail community and make opening a retail business easier than ever before, Open With Faire offers new shop owners up to £20,000 in credit to stock their shelves ahead of opening day, with no added interest or fees and net 60 day payment terms. With limited funding options available to small business owners, generating enough capital to cover all opening costs can be challenging. This programme helps ensure shop owners can open with the merchandise they need to attract customers from day one. Globally, Faire has provided $100 million in inventory credit across the US and Europe since 2021 through Open with Faire. “We are all about levelling the playing field for customers and making opening a retail business as seamless as possible,” said Ami Vora, Chief Product Officer at Faire. “Open with Faire is an extension of our core business model and by providing access to the inventory our customers need to get started, we’re not just offering financial support, we’re investing in the dreams and ambitions of future business owners.” www.faire.com/en-gb/open-with-faire GIFT OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2025 LAUNCHES The Giftware Association is thrilled to announce the launch of the Gift of the Year Awards 2025, marking another year of celebrating excellence in the UK gift industry. On with the show Trade show updates from home and abroad Celebrate the future of garden retail at Glee’s 50th anniversary exhibition The garden retail industry’s most anticipated event, Glee, is poised to mark a monumental milestone as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this September (10th – 12th, NEC Birmingham). However, this year, Glee not only celebrates half a century at the pinnacle of garden retail but also ushers in a new era with its return to a September dateline, based on comprehensive industry feedback. Glee’s Evolution: A response to industry needs Glee has long been a beacon for the garden retail sector, fostering growth and innovation. This year’s shift to a September date is a direct response to extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, ranging from independent retailers to large-scale suppliers. The feedback highlighted the need for a timing that aligns more closely with the industry’s evolving buying cycles and seasonal preparations. In a year where the season started later than ever the move has been celebrated across the board, as it means the key trade show is ideally positioned as the season draws to a close, and thoughts turn to the year ahead. Matthew Mein, Glee’s Event Director, emphasised the importance of staying in tune with the industry’s pulse. “Our industry is constantly evolving, and Glee plays a crucial role in shaping the future of garden retail. By engaging with our community and understanding their needs, we can ensure that Glee continues to support our stakeholders effectively by providing a platform for growth, celebrating innovation and bringing the market together when it is needed most. “This year, in particular, the new September dateline is more valuable than ever, as the season has taken longer than usual to start. With Glee running in autumn, buyers will be armed with a more in-depth knowledge of their needs for the 2025 season, primed to place orders and seek the innovation that will differentiate and enhance their offering in the year ahead.” Innovative features and unmissable experiences Glee 2024 promises to be an exceptional event, featuring eight carefully curated product sectors that showcase the best in garden care, outdoor entertaining, landscaping, and more. EXCLUSIVELY BRAND SHOWCASE BREAKS PREVIOUS ATTENDANCE FIGURES The ever popular ‘curated for media’ Brand Showcase at the 2024 Exclusively Show was billed as being better than ever and proved its point with a 41 percent uplift in press attendance over the two days of the show. Day one included phenomenally well attended product demos, while day two saw the debut of the new Press Briefing Lunch. The Press Briefing featured an introductory presentation from the Exclusively team, a guided tour of the space including brand and product demonstrations and a Trend Showcase presentation from trend forecaster, Scarlet Opus, including a tour its picks for ‘best of the best’ on trend products for 24/25 and beyond. Brand Showcase curator, Richard Watts explained, “The Brand Showcase is always an exciting opportunity for media and influencers alike, given its reputation for super-accurate predictions of the trends ahead. This year, on day two we welcomed top consumer and trade titles from print and broadcast to their own ‘event within an event’ – and this new feature proved massively popular. “Throughout the two days, product demos were massive draws including a makeup mini-session courtesy of EKO Home featuring the company’s new LED travel mirror, a lively and massively popular showcase of steam ironing and steam cleaning by Polti, and a personalised apron embroidery feature from Salter.” The Exclusively Brand Showcase is a ‘capsule event,’ which hosts some two hundred journalists, bloggers, and influencers overall, treating them to a curated edit of the show. More information about Exclusively 2025 can be obtained from the BHETA Member Services Team on +44 (0)121 237 1130 or on the www.bheta.co.uk, or via the website www.exclusivelyshows.co.uk Hale Events introduces new ‘Sustainability Stars’ trails through its South West trade shows Many of us are thinking about how we have less impact on the planet and move forwards to a sustainable future. At Hale Events’ Expowest Cornwall trade show last year, Sustainable Business Master’s degree students from Exeter University surveyed attendees, and 78 percent said that sustainability was important or extremely important to their business. Sustainability is becoming a more important factor in the buying decisions of consumers, whether they’re planning to reduce emissions, reduce plastic usage or waste, improve their supply chain, manage food waste more efficiently, or consider their choice of transport, so it is increasingly important that trade shows present and highlight products they want to buy. Hale Events will be highlighting Sustainability Stars at all its trade shows in 2025. They want to call attention to those exhibitors who are running their businesses from a more ethical standpoint, such as those who are certified B-Corporations, who care about not just profit, but people and the planet too. Visitors looking for products and suppliers with such credentials can look out for these Stars throughout the show and chat to them about what they are doing. This will help meet the increasing consumer desire for sustainable products. RECORD-BREAKING VISITOR NUMBERS AT FARM SHOP & DELI SHOW 2024 With Farm Shop & Deli Show returning to the NEC 7-9 April 2025, we look back at the 2024 show, with organiser William Reed reporting a record-breaking number of visitors attending the UK’s largest specialist retail gathering. Over three days, the show was packed with more than 400 suppliers, new product launches, exciting live events and sessions and trend-setting food and drink for all your gifting needs. Visitor Mark Bickerdike, Director at Bickerdikes Garden Centre explained that the: “Farm Shop & Deli Show has been probably the busiest and the most vibrant and a great buzz about the place. I’ve had a fantastic day, really good. We got an awful lot out of it.” In June, William Reed also announced that the UK Food & Drink Shows, comprising of Farm Shop & Deli Show, Food & Drink Expo, National Convenience Show and Foodex Manufacturing Solutions, won Best UK Tradeshow more than 8,000 sqm at the prestigious AEO Excellence Awards in London. Mark your calendars for Farm Shop & Deli Show, taking place from 7-9 April 2025 at the NEC, Birmingham. With the likes of Montezuma’s, Spice Kitchen, World of Sweets and Cotswold Fayre already signed-up to exhibit at the show next year, it will be a must-attend event for the specialist retail and gifting sectors in 2025. www.farmshopanddelishow.co.uk New online gift tradeshow set to launch in 2025 The Gift Fair is an online gift tradeshow, set to take place from January 8th- February 28th, 2025. Organised by Fabian Santoro and his team, this exciting platform hosts trade shows that work around you not the other way around. The platform is not like anything you’ve seen before – it’s not a website, directory or meeting scheduler. Every aspect is designed to make trade shows faster, cheaper, easier and better. You can speak to real people in real time via instant messaging, video chat, exchange business cards and much more. You can find established brands like Professor Puzzle, LifeCharms and Swing Cards as well as the hottest newcomers like Cosmic Cuties and BangoBerry. Other great names such as Find Your Glow and Ginger Fox are also going to be there with more brands signing up each week. There are also exciting European brands who sell to the UK like Leuchtturm1917 and Smemo. The Gift fair provides attendees a chance to connect with more people in the industry than ever before by removing the geographical and financial constraints of traditional trade shows, giving everyone greater choice all from the comfort of, well, anywhere! Additionally, by eliminating the major costs associated with traditional trade shows—such as space, stands, carpet, electrics, shipping, insurance, travel etc.—we make it possible for everyone to participate at a significantly lower expense. Organiser Fabian Santoro says: “Part of the big appeal with an online trade show is the environmental benefits, it eliminates the unnecessary carbon-footprint and scandalous waste from traditional trade shows by well over 90 percent and we know that is a big factor for many. We’ve made it so you can be kind to the environment at a faction of the cost of attending a traditional trade show. I know this all sounds too good to be true and I appreciate some may be sceptical. If you’re curious get in touch and we can give you a demo. Seeing is believing! “We’re excited to announce for the first time to have a hall dedicated to ethically sourced, eco-conscious and fairtrade brands.” The visitor list is growing continuously too, with visitors from UK chains and independents as well as international buyers from Italy, France, Netherlands, Serbia and the USA confirmed – tickets going on general sale in September. This is a must-try event that you won’t want to miss if you’re part of the gift industry. Visit www.thegiftfair.com to register now. For on trend colour choices, look no further than a stunning amber carafe, available with a matching tumbler. Both items are crafted from ribbed glass for a uniquely vintage look. Ballet slippers are nestled amongst pine cones to represent the nine ladies dancing, and a gold ring entangled by eucalyptus and holly. A fresh and timeless take on this well loved song, the collection includes two iterations of the design, the Twelve Days of Christmas Wreath and the Twelve Days of Christmas repeat pattern, allowing for cohesive mixing and matching of different items. The design evokes images of a snow-covered ground surrounded by twinkling lights and beautifully adorned wreaths placed carefully upon doors. The house inside is filled with the sweet sounds of family chattering and the cheerful chorus of carolers singing throughout the streets whilst waiting in anticipation for Father Christmas. Every product is lovingly made in the UK using the finest British craftsmanship, resulting in a beautiful blend of heritage and contemporary design. From the Cornish clay that creates the fine bone china for its ceramics, to the 100 percent cotton textiles which are printed using environmentally safe water-based inks. The company prides itself on working closely with manufacturers who use sustainable materials and processes. The products available are two apron designs, two tea towel designs, a mug, a bauble, a table runner, two canvas bag designs, a set of four coasters, a candle, a set of eight Christmas cards, three wooden decorations, and two luxury soaps. www.victoriaeggs.com REPEAT REPEAT The new Puffin design is the latest addition to the Country & Coast range of bone china by Repeat Repeat. Crown & Rose Pewter was established in 1700 in London. They traded under the name Brown & Englefield and then, later, changed their name to Englefields – the last remaining pewter company in London and the oldest cast-pewter manufacturer in the world. Each piece is handmade using traditional methods of gravity casting and hand-turning from three centuries ago. Over the centuries its product line has ranged from tankards, teapots and trophies to bleeding pans commissioned by Florence Nightingale and candlesticks for the altar boys at St. Paul’s Cathedral. All of the pieces were hand-finished and bore the authentic Crown & Rose touchmark. In 1987, Englefields was acquired by Royal Selangor. Royal Selangor celebrates Crown & Rose’s 300 years of heritage by reviving some of the brand’s archives. www.royalselangor.com CAMILLA ELPHICK Introducing the Petite Pearl Bucket Bag from Camilla Elphick, a must-have accessory for your summer wardrobe.
