Brands participating in multistore gift card schemes or offering their own gift cards are reaping the rewards, particularly from younger demographics like Millennials, who are embracing gift cards for their convenience and flexibility. The latest research from the Gift Card & Voucher Association (GCVA) and Global Data highlights how gift cards are effective tools for channeling consumer behaviour by not only introducing new shoppers to brands but also encouraging them to ‘upgarde’ their purchase beyond the card’s value. The latest data in GCVA’s State of the Nation Report reveals gift cards to be an increasingly effective way for retailers to attract fresh audiences. According to the research, 63 percent of gift card recipients discovered a new brand through their gift card. Among Millennials, this figure jumps to an impressive 74.6 percent, underscoring the power of gift cards as a customer acquisition tool. By integrating gift card offerings, retailers can effectively raise brand awareness and reach untapped markets. Gift cards don’t just bring customers in—they encourage them to spend more. The data shows that 61 percent of shoppers redeeming gift cards spend beyond the card’s value, with many exceeding their balance by an additional £10 to £20. Consumers often use a gift card to ‘upgrade’ their purchase, going for a higher value item than they might have done previously. Gift cards are also helping to champion local businesses according to the research. Around 20 percent of shoppers purchasing gift cards for themselves cited the desire to support local enterprises as a key motivator. This growing preference for community-focused shopping presents an avenue for smaller retailers to foster stronger customer relationships and bolster their local presence. The shift toward digital gift cards is further amplifying their impact, especially as a choice for Gen Z shoppers. The industry is witnessing a surge in digital adoption, creating new ways for brands to engage with their audience and influence spending habits. Also, encouraging gift cards to build relevance with shoppers who prefer digital shopping or to use mobile phones as their preferred payment method. Hannah Shimko, Managing Director at the GCVA, commented: “Gift cards have evolved into a powerful tool for driving growth across the retail landscape. From introducing new customers to encouraging additional spending, their potential is enormous. As the shift toward digital solutions continues, brands that embrace this trend will be well-positioned to capitalise on these opportunities while supporting local businesses and building customer loyalty. “The findings showcase the untapped potential of gift cards in enhancing customer experiences, driving incremental sales, and fostering community connections, proving that this versatile tool is an essential asset for retailers navigating today’s challenging market.” INDUSTRY NEWS 9

BRITISH CONSUMERS SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Despite stormy weather conditions hitting the UK, the nation’s support for small businesses remains strong, according to new research. The study by American Express to mark 2024’s Small Business Saturday in December shows that even faced with the force of Storm Darragh, over 10 million Brits shopped small on Small Business Saturday. The research suggests that a collective £634m was spent on Small Business Saturday in-store and online. The survey of 4,000 adults revealed average spend per person on the day was the highest since 2020, with top reasons for shopping small including wanting to support business owners on the high street (53 percent) and recognising that it has been a tough period for small businesses (39 percent). Encouragingly, seven in 10 (70 percent) adults surveyed said they will continue to shop small next year because of the positive impact these businesses have on local communities. These figures are based on a third-party study that gathered consumer self-reported data from a nationally representative sample of UK adults – and does not reflect actual receipts or sales from Small Business Saturday, or American Express Cardmember spending data. The research asked consumers about their level of support for small businesses across this year; of those upping their support, they are doing so in a variety of ways; almost three quarters (72 percent) say they are shopping small where possible; threefifths (60 percent) are recommending small businesses to friends and family; and nearly one-third (31 percent) are posting positive reviews online. American Express is founder and principal supporter of Small Business Saturday, which encourages consumers to ‘shop small’ and support independent businesses in their communities. It is the UK’s most successful small business campaign; over the 12 years it has been running in the UK, it has engaged millions of shoppers and seen billions of pounds spent with small businesses. Widespread support for this year’s Small Business Saturday campaign came from across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosting a reception for small businesses at Downing Street and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves undertaking a special visit to meet small firms in Leeds. Government ministers joined MPs from all political parties, including the Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch, in posting their support across social media. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham were also among senior figures supporting the campaign. Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday, said: “I am thrilled to see so many people out supporting small businesses on Small Business Saturday, even despite the weekend’s terrible weather. Not only that, but spend per shopper is up this year, showing a really encouraging trend for small businesses looking for a Christmas boost. It is so critical for businesses that we get out to support them, not just this weekend but throughout the festive season. Being conscious about where our spend goes, even when budgets are tight, gives consumers the power to make a real difference to communities. Together we can shepherd in an optimistic 2025.” Dan Edelman, UK General Manager, Merchant Services, American Express, said: “Small businesses are vital to local communities so it’s incredibly encouraging to see this level of support on Small Business Saturday, even with the bad weather across most of the country. Looking ahead, it’s positive that consumers are intending to continue their support into next year too, something which will help keep local high streets thriving.” DULUX ANNOUNCES COLOUR OF THE YEAR Dulux announced their Colour of the Year as True Joy. We all want happier, uplifting home interiors for 2025 and the colour yellow gives us a boost of positive inspiration ahead of the new year. Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments: “Dulux True Joy is an energetic shade of yellow with warm, golden undertones. The timeless charm of the colour of the year comes from its balance of dusky versus bright. True Joy is more vibrant than a mustard tone and has more depth and warmth than shades of lemon or canary yellow. “Yellow is traditionally a colour that makes us feel happy and optimistic – True Joy is no exception. A room painted in True Joy is a room always filled with sunshine, energy, and a feeling of excitement. But it’s yellow – we hear you say! We admit, it’s a daring design commitment to paint an entire room yellow, which is why this specific shade chosen by Dulux works perfectly as an accent colour too. “The Dulux Colour of the Year 2025 is meant to inspire people to ‘jump out’ of their comfort zone. What we love about True Joy is that it encourages you to become colour confident in decorating your home. Whether you feel brave enough to paint your entire room yellow or keep it small to highlight features – any colour that gives us good vibes and happy feelings cannot be the wrong choice.” 12

The report, The Biggest Trends in Pet & Garden Retail, reveals how health-conscious consumers, eco-friendly practices, and tech-driven innovations are propelling growth in these dynamic markets. The findings highlight significant consumer investment, with spending on pets reaching £9.89 billion in 2022, a staggering 182 percent growth since 2005, and garden retail climbing to £7.1 billion in 2022 (Statista). While pandemic lockdowns initially spurred this growth, the trends have proven to be enduring, driven by the emotional and wellbeing benefits tied to pet ownership and gardening. Key highlights of the report Pets and Wellbeing: 85 percent of people in a Blue Cross survey noted improved mental wellbeing as a key benefit of owning a pet. A 2023 Statista survey found that 94 percent of respondents said their pets made them happy, and 44 percent credited their pets with being a lifeline during the cost-of-living crisis. Gardens and Stress Reduction: Research from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) shows that daily gardening can lead to 6.6 percent higher wellbeing scores and 4.2 percent lower stress levels compared to non-gardeners. Emerging trends in pet retail (2024/2025) Luxury Pet Products: Nearly a third of pet owners (31 percent) prioritise their pet’s happiness over costs, spending £500 annually on luxury pet items (MoneySuperMarket). Healthy Pet Food: 60 percent of pet food buyers in the UK prioritise healthconscious choices, favouring natural ingredients and fresh options. Service-Led Retail Spaces: Pet stores are evolving into service hubs, offering grooming, veterinary care, nutrition advice, and even pet-friendly cafes. Leading examples include PetCo’s flagship store in New York, featuring an indoor dog park, food preparation kitchen, and omnichannel shopping options. Personalisation and Loyalty: Retailers are innovating with personalised services to retain price-sensitive customers. Pet-friendly spaces like workplaces, hotels, and department stores are also gaining traction. The bigger picture The report emphasises that the pet and garden sectors are “stickier” than most retail industries, thanks to their ties to living entities and the measurable benefits they bring to consumers’ lives. Sustainability, personalisation, and innovative retail formats will be critical for businesses aiming to thrive in these markets. “This is clearly a time of great potential for both the pet and garden sectors,” the report concludes. “Consumers are more invested than ever in these categories, as they reflect everything they care about – their family, their friends, their home environment, the planet, the lives they’re living. It’s the retailers who understand this who are set to bloom.” www.source-homeandgift.com 16

Makasi already has a best-selling range of larger hand-carved teak root mushrooms with heights ranging up to 120cm, so when Managing Director Dan Unsworth discovered the mini, handpainted versions on a recent buying trip he knew they’d be a big hit with his customer base. “We had already noticed a growing trend towards our retailers buying smaller, gift-related items,” said Dan. “Handicraft products like our handpainted birds are becoming increasingly popular, and our new mushrooms are already flying out the door. We’re constantly expanding our range to keep things fresh and ensure that we can always offer something different to give our clients the edge on their competitors.” The new range of sculptures present an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ selection of hand-carved and hand-painted mushrooms inspired by the natural world, with a colourful collection of styles, shapes and sizes ranging from 8cm to 26cm high, with some incorporating candle holders or garden birds. Makasi’s fair trade products are all handcrafted by small, family businesses using sustainable or recycled materials so each one is truly distinctive, and the company maintains a close relationship with their manufacturers so they can guarantee the quality and ethical production of their products. The company holds a huge range of stock at its UK warehouse – all available on 48-hour delivery – and hold regular warehouse open days for clients to visit them in person or via video call for a closer look at the products. Each tube contains 20 balls of the same herb. They’re easy to use – simply scatter on top of soil, water well and nature will take care of the rest. One tube will cover a good three to five pots or a square meter of a garden bed. The card packaging includes a barcode, scattering time and full instructions, where it’s also asked that some of the plants be left to flower for the bees. The seedballs are manufactured at Seedball’s factory in London from a mixture of clay, peat-free compost (made from recycled garden waste), chilli powder and UK-sourced seeds. Without the need for complex gardening or expertise (or even the need to dig!), the Seedball Herb Tubes have a board gifting appeal to anyone with an interest in sustainable gardening, growing-your-own kitchen garden and helping wildlife along the way. www.seedball.co.uk
